Valerie Woods, a tv veteran writer/producer who recently served as co-executive producer/writer for Queen Sugar (Season 4), will lead our online master scriptwriting workshop covering the essentials of scriptwriting for major TV and streaming platforms. The 4-session workshop will focus on giving you a strong foundation in story and character development. You will learn how to create strong and richly layered women characters as well as the nuts and bolts of writing scripts. The workshop will offer tips on pitching your script to such major content platforms as HBO, Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu. Enjoy a nurturing and open creative environment where you will have a chance to write your first script or develop a work-in-progress. 

Once you have registered you will be sent information on the process for accessing the class online. You will also be given access to a folder with your first reading assignment and the syllabus.

The online workshop is being presented by Reel Sisters, the first Oscar Qualifying Festival for short narratives devoted to women filmmakers, and BRIC, the leading presenter of free cultural programming in Brooklyn, and one of the largest in New York City. Master Scriptwriting on Writing Strong Female Characters is a Trademark of Reel Sisters, the nation’s leading film festival devoted to women of color. Valerie C. Woods is a writer/producer in television and film. Valerie recently served as a co-executive producer/writer on Season 4 of the critically acclaimed television drama series Queen Sugar, created by Ava DuVernay and airing on Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). She has also been Adjunct Faculty for the Stephens College Low Residency MFA Television & Screenwriting program since 2015. She also wrote the screen adaptation of the novel Tempest Rising by Diane McKinney-Whetstone, with the production company of actor/director Phylicia Rashad.Valerie’s venture – Staged/Lit – has produced a series of staged readings of scripts adapted from literary work. The first two readings were television pilots adapted from a memoir and a novel. The series is co-sponsored by The Los Angeles Performing Arts Conservatory and Syd Field – The Art of Visual Storytelling organization. 

Valerie is also the founder of the independent press, BooksEndependent LLC, whose mission is to publish (via ebooks and print) a maximum of 2-3 titles of new and established writers annually. The press now represents four authors and has published five titles, including Valerie’s girl detective novel, Katrin’s Chronicles: The Canon of Jacqueléne Dyanne. She is also the author of Something for Everyone (50 Original Monologues), which is published by Samuel French, Inc.
